Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KOs) has spent the past seven weeks training in Big Bear, Calif. for his super welterweight showdown against Floyd ?Money? Mayweather (44-0, 26 KOs) on Sept. 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Team Canelo chose to set up camp at the gym owned by of one of his former foes and future Hall of Famer, Shane Mosley. On Tuesday, the Sugar Shane Mosley High Altitude Training Center hosted the media for Alvarez?s workout. Over a hundred members of the press crammed into this small but complete one ring gym, which is open-air on one length.
Shane and his father Jack were on hand to open up the facility, and the former lightweight, welterweight and light middleweight champion said he has enjoyed hosting the Mexican idol. “I like having [Canelo] here. He’s been working with my son, Shane Jr. We’ve been like family.”
However, Mosley remained neutral on the outcome of ?The One.? “I don’t have a prediction,? he said. ?I just want to watch a great fight.” Shane is the only fighter to have experienced 12 rounds with both Floyd and Canelo, and vouched that, “They both hit about the same speed, but Canelo is stronger with the body shots.”
Canelo entered the gym with his team and addressed the media prior to his workout. He said through an interpreter that with only three weeks to go, he cannot wait to get in the ring and fight. When asked if he felt that he has enough experience to challenge such a seasoned champion, Canelo replied that he asked for this fight and stated emphatically that he is ready.
