Banal TKOs Terdkiat

TERDKIAT Jandaeng lived up to his billing as an iron-jawed counter-puncher from Thailand.

Although Terdkiat’s toughness helped him survive the barrage of punches, referee Tony Pesons saved him from further damage Saturday night, as he ruled the Thai fighter unfit to receive more punches.

Pesons stopped the fight two seconds into the ninth round and awarded AJ “Bazooka” Banal a technical knockout (TKO) win in the main event of the SGG Sports Promotion dubbed Stars of the Future at the Mandaue City Sports Complex.

“The boxer won’t surrender and so did his cornerman. I had to stop the fight to prevent further damage because Banal was too much for him,” said Pesons, after declaring the fight over at the 2:58 mark of the ninth of the scheduled 10-round contest.

Boxing lesson

The 18-year-old Banal was all over Terdkiat from the start until the stoppage, as the ALA Boy gave him a neat boxing lesson.

The Thai fighter offered only little offense as he was forced to defend from the barrage of punches that Banal unleashed.

“Pesons should have stopped the contest earlier. But nevertheless, it was a tough fight for Banal. That Thai fighter did not even fall despite the number of power punches to the head and body,” said ALA Boys mentor Antonio Lopez Aldeguer.

A huge lump on both checks of Terdkiat that started to swell from the third round and his badly punished body forced Pesons to stop the contest, which became one-sided as Banal did not allow the opponent to throw punches.

On rare occasions, Terdkiat tried to counter the punches of Banal, when he was in trouble and when he was cornered.

Spent fighter

Pesons might have been right after all, as Terdkiat seemed to be a spent fighter, after he changed to street clothes after the fight.

The Thai sat wearily in a corner, waiting for his and his manager Soontorn Moonkham’s ride back to their hotel.

In another bout, ALA Boy Rocky Fuentes exacted vengeance over Greg Mangan after scoring a unanimous decision after 10-rounds that saw both fighters sustain cuts due to the punches they received.

Edward Ligas and Edwin Barrientos scored the bout 98-92 each, while Noel Flores gave 99-91 all for Fuentes, who proved to be a meaner man following their controversial draw in 2004.

ALA Boy Milan Milendo also scored a unanimous decision over Fabio Marfa (97-93, 100-90, 98-92).

Meanwhile, Glenn Masicampo scored a TKO win at the 1:59 mark of the fourth round over Anton Olarte. However, Olarte’s manager Willy Neri and second Roger Sumampong of Davao City protested the call of referee Teddy Alivio, who stopped the contest right after their boxers was waived off the contest.

Standing firm

Alivio gave Olarte a mandatory eight count, which only applies for a knock down.

However, Alivio stood firm on his decision, contending that Olarte’s eyes already crossed and could no longer respond to his call.

Other winners include Joseph Omania over Carlo Magale by unanimous decision, Edward Apa-ap by split decision over Ruben Santillanosa, Leon Maratas by unanimous decision over Joel De La Cruz, and Romeo Jakosalem over Romnick Rapista by majority decision.

The Noel Sungahid and Jun Intor fight was declared technical draw at the 1:39 mark of the second round.
