PEOPLE’s champ Manny Pacquiao on Friday went to the scandal-rocked Commission on Elections (Comelec) to show support and regain the people’s confidence in the election body.
“I am urging the people to support the Comelec and give their 100-percent trust,” Pacquiao said after a closed-door meeting with Comelec Chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr. and other election officials.
Pacquiao, who was being wooed by the Arroyo government to run for the Manila vice mayoralty post, clarified that his visit to the Comelec main office in Intramuros, Manila has nothing to do with politics. He said he just wanted to help the commission by restoring its credibility and integrity “especially now that in just a few months we are set to hold another elections.”
In a separate interview with Abalos, the Comelec chief said Pacquiao’s visit to the Comelec was merely to pledge his full support to the election body, which is again suffering from attacks against its credibility.
Abalos said he used to be a promoter of Pacquiao when he was still an amateur boxer and that the Filipino boxer was first trained in a gym that was built when he was still the mayor of Mandaluyong.
He is optimistic that Pacquiao’s endorsement would boost the image of the Comelec.
Also present during the meeting with Pacquiao are Comelec Commissioners Resurreccion Borra and Rene Sarmiento. (MSN/Sunnex)
