Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao on Friday denied filing a certificate of candidacy before the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), DZMM reported.
Pacquiao made the statement following a brief closed-door meeting with COMELEC chairman Benjamin Abalos at the poll body’s head office in Manila Friday morning. The meeting fueled speculations that the fighter is running in the May elections.
Pacquiao did not disclose details of the meeting but said that he pledged support for the COMELEC in the coming polls.
Abalos welcomed the boxer’s endorsement, saying that this would help raise the integrity of the poll body.
Over the years, Pacquiao has been wooed by politicians to enter politics.
Pacquiao, however, maintained that his priority at this time is his boxing career, which has been consistently bringing honor to the Philippines.
