Canelo ?lvarez: Punishing Sparring Partners?

Twenty-three year old Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO), the current RING Magazine and WBC/WBA Jr Middleweight Champion is allegedly pummelling his sparring partners as he prepares for his September 14th showdown with fight legend and top pound-for-pound boxer Floyd Mayweather.

It’s not easy being a sparring partner for Canelo as he continues to score knockouts, break ribs and unleash various forms of damage, according to a report from BoxingScene.

Can this be true – or is Team Alvarez trying to get in Floyd Mayweather’s head?

Or is Golden Boy simply attempting to drum up even more interest in this bout? “I just spoke to Chepo Reynoso and he told me [Canelo] already knocked off four sparring partners. We’ve already changed eight or nine people, and just sent him another from Philadelphia. I’ve never seen him like this. One of the sparring partners broke a rib, two others were injured, one of them injured a shoulder and another was knocked out. So it’s been very good,” stated BoxingScene.com’s Rene Umanzor.

This isn’t the first time its been reported that Alvarez was bull-dozing sparring partners.

In April 2012, FightSaga reported Canelo Alvarez, on one of the final days of sparring in preparation for Shane Mosley, was presented with the opportunity to spar two of the four sparring partners who were brought in.

Alvarez shockingly stated, “I want them all.”

The first two sparring partners managed to last the distance of three rounds but Canelo stopped the last two inside of three.

So perhaps the rumors are true and Canelo is simply going about his business as usual?

Do Sparring Partners Get Beaten Up? Although they are suppossed to use restraint, it’s not entirely uncommon for an elite fighter to abuse his sparring partners. After all, a young George Foreman sometimes pulverized sparring partners to the point where those sessions weren’t “sparring” anymore. “His (George Foreman’s) sparring sessions aren’t just a training routine, they are, instead, intense efforts by sparring partners to simply survive a 3-minute round,” stated then-sports reporter Bryant Gumble, prior to Foreman’s ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ bout against Muhammad Ali in 1974.

Canelo Alvarez will attempt to use his strength, size and youth to rough-up the ultra-skilled Floyd Mayweather (44-0, 26 KO) but many have tried and all have failed.

Will Canelo succeed?
