Even though the much anticipated second clash between wily boxer Marco Antonio Barrera and blockbuster Manny Pacquiao is currently stalled, due to legal problems, World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman insists that it will become a “Fall” reality.
Many boxing fans are fretting about the delay in a second showdown, particularly Mexicans, who are clamoring to witness Marco avenge his 2003 eleventh round KO defeat, dished out by an marvelously on form Manny who’s since overcome a fistful of other Mexican greats.
Speaking at a coffee break meeting with reporters in the downtown offices of the WBC, Don Jose commented: “This is a puzzle that not even money has been able to resolve, so we took the only step that could be taken. We authorized Barrera to make a voluntary defense of his world title, and Pacquiao to make a voluntary defense of his International title.
“Once those fights have been held, and hopefully the court will have a ruling about the law suit between Golden Boy and Top Rank, in three or four months, then the WBC will proceed with a purse offer.
“And that fight WILL take place, because Manny Pacquiao wants to fight Barrera and Marco Antonio Barrera wants to fight Pacquiao. It’ll happen during Autumn, I think.”
That said, the tune up will be much harder for Barrera than Pacquiao. Manny’s facing wily veteran Korean Injin Chi, who’s clawed his way back to become WBC Featherweight Champion again, overcoming injury.
But not only is Marco fighting a countryman, but also a great amigo. A family and friends get together photo which hangs in the reception of Marco’s gym shows a beaming Juan Manuel Marquez. The two have been good friends for years.
Juan Manuel showed his adaptability, fantastic conditioning and raw courage by surviving three staggering first round knockdowns when he fought Manny in 2004.He strategically regrouped for a thrilling hard fought draw.
A counter puncher by trade and a master craftsman, Juan Manuel won’t allow Marco Antonio Barrera to dictate the pace, or outbox him with a long left jab. He’s certainly smart enough not to be outsmarted.
Meanwhile, Manny’s heavier fire power should see Chi off, just so long as he manages to motivate himself sufficiently during training now that the kettle is off the boil and simmering.
Mindful of the damage Manny’s already wrought to the cr?me of Mexican boxing, Jose Sulaiman dubbed him “A rhino, who can knock down a ten foot wall with his punches and determination.”
But he also quickly added: “Marco is a highly intelligent, courageous and good boxer. So it’s going to be a very, very, very good fight.
“Let me tell you, Mexicans want Pacquiao. They don’t want anyone else in the world! And the Philippines want Barrera!”
