The winner will receive a sweet 24 carat gold belt which will be presented by the WBC (World Boxing Council).
On September 14, WBA Jr Middleweight Champion Floyd Mayweather vs face WBC Champ Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in a megafight title unification bout which will likely be this year’s biggest fight.
Keep in mind, this particular belt does not represent a title – It’s merely a “trophy,” albeit a very pricey one.
Also, the entire belt will not be made of gold – Only the center and both coins and flags which sit at opposite ends will be. Nevertheless, it will a very expensive piece.
The WBC said in recent statement: “This belt is earned for sheer excellence, but also to honor the careers of both fighters, who’ve been steadfastly loyal to the WBC. The other accolade is that of the best pound for pound. Both boxers go into this fight undefeated.”
Regardless of the reason, it’s a nice little reward.
And Mayweather vs Canelo is far from the first time the WBC has done something like this.
Last year for Mayweather vs Cotto, a beautiful trophy dubbed the ‘Diamond Belt was given to the winner, Floyd Mayweather, compliments of the World Boxing Council.
That belt contained an 18 carat gold plate and was laced with 598 diamonds, 196 emeralds, rubies and 150 6 Swarovski gemstones. Its estimated worth was roughly $50,000 USD (38,074.9 Euro).
If the Diamond Belt was worth that much, the 24K Gold Belt must carry even greater value.
