VALERO VS. PACQUAIO
Dougie, In your honest opinion how would your son do against Manny Pacquaio. If they fought say in two months. Please Dougie pick a winner. – Wayne, Woodland Hills, CA
If they fought in two months I think it would be a 50-50 encounter; seriously, I believe it would be even money fight, Wayne. Whoever landed first power punch would have a decided edge in winning the fight and I honestly believe it would a 130-pound version of Hagler vs. Hearns. If Valero is given the rest of the year to continue to mature and develop in the ring, and the young man does so over the next two or three fights, I will favor him over Pacquiao in late ’07 or early ’08 – which is saying a lot because I consider the PacMan to be the best fighter in the world, pound for pound.
VALERO IMPROVING
Hey Dougie, All the best for 2007. Just saw you son stretch out Losada. It wasn’t much of a fight, but Valero looked better, more patient sharp and less wild. I mean if you can judge patience in one round. Maybe he will get Pacquio now.
I realize you were in Japan so obviously you didn’t need my comments on the fight.

Yes, my wife does think I’m insane, but we attended college together so she knew I was a hopeless mutant long before we hitched up. As far as boxing is concerned, she accepts my incurable sickness, and even encouraged my trip to Japan. In fact, if it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t have left my room while I was in Tokyo. She pressured me to get out and see the city and to do more than just cover a boxing match while I was there and I did (if only to avoid her nagging upon my return), and I intend to detail some of my travels in an upcoming “Tokyo Notes” column.
