TIME flies when fists are having fun. Or was it time flies when you?re having fun?
Pardon my random ramblings, my fellow Last Rounders, but my overly caffeinated brain is currently on overdrive.
Whatever happened to the 1st half of the year, as I woke up earlier today realizing it?s the 1st week of July.
That also means we are past due for an update on our pound for pound rankings. Without much further ado:
1) Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KOs). ?Pretty Boy? once again re-affirmed his status as the sharpest tool in the shed with his clinical breakdown of Robert ?The Ghost? Guerrero last May.
Guerrero was pretty confident coming into the fight, and some boxing pundits actually pegged him as a very live underdog.
The fight wasn?t even close. Though Guerrero had his moments in the early goings, Floyd found his rhythm in the 3rd round and never looked back. He punished Guerrero with sharp counters, flummoxed his offense along the ropes with his defensive wizardry and dominated the fight with his excellent boxing skills.
Yes? he?s definitely lost a step or two, but is clearly still good enough to beat the best that the field has to offer. Next up is the formidable challenge posed by Canelo Alvarez in November.
2) Juan Manuel Marquez (55-6, 40KOs). No change here as ?Dinamita? is still at the second spot by virtue of his stunning knockout of Manny Pacquiao last year. He is set to do battle with Tim Bradley in October in a matchup featuring the Pacman?s latest conquerors.
3) Andre Ward (26-0, 14KOs). Andre Ward moves up one spot and overtakes Nonito Donaire .
But his continuing inactivity might eventually derail his status in these rankings.
4) Sergio Gabriel Martinez (51-2, 28KOs). Martinez defeated unheralded Martin Murray last April but was in trouble for some stretches in the fight. He suffered a knockdown in the 8th round which might be emblematic of the 38 year old fighter?s career path henceforth.
5) Wladimir Klitschko (60-3, 51 KOs)- Dr. Steelhammer moves up on account of his successful defense against Francisco Pianeta in Germany, stopping the overmatched Italian fighter in six rounds.
6) Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20KOs). ?The Filipino Flash? lost via unanimous decision to crafty Cuban spoiler Gulliermo Rigondeax last April. That fight was close, but Rigo impressed the judges more with his evasive tactics.
7) Manny Pacquiao (54-5, 38KOs)- ?Our Pambansang Kamao?should be ready to shake off some ring rust when he begins training for his intriguing bout against Brandon Rios in November.
8) Adrien Broner (27-0, 22KOS) ?The cocky Broner maintains his spot with a decision win over Paulie Malignaggi in a fight that was closer than most fans expected.
9) Vitali Klitschko (45-2, 41KOS)- No change.
10) Timothy Bradley- (30-0, 12KOs)- ?Desert Storm? maintains his spot pending his seminal duke0out with Juan Manuel Marquez this October.
STC ?89 RUN. After I hobbled my way to a last place finish at my last 21K run, finishing it with desiccated kidneys and necessitating a visit to the doctor, I wondered when would be the next time I would ever lace on a pair of running shoes for an organized run.
Looks like I spoke too soon.
I just can?t say no to our lovely and well-heeled Batch 89 counterparts from St. Theresa?s College who will be holding a fund-raising fun run called ?Run with Venus? this Sunday, July 7, 4:30AM, at the Ayala Terraces.
Two of my closest friends, talented lawyer-twins, Carrie Dela Serna- Unchuan and Marie de la Serna-Teves as well as fitness buffs Maricel Martinez Maniquis, Maricar Ong and Joanne Arcangel have been exhorting me to wake up early so they can hand me the perfunctory cup of water at one of the stops, and well, how could I say no?
Perhaps you would be so kind as to serve some beer instead at the Zumba party afterwards, ladies? I certainly hope so. See you there guys.
