Boxing superstars Floyd Mayweather Junior and Canelo Alvarez made a stop at the Alamo on Monday to promote their upcoming fight in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Fans lined up early Monday afternoon ready to see the two fighters promote their big title fight, but not everyone believes the Alamo is the right spot for such events.
Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson opposes using the area as a site for news conferences.
“This would not happen at Gettysburg, Alamo Plaza is where Bowie and Travis fell.” said Patterson.
“It should be treated as the hallowed ground that it is.”
It was a similar scene in April, when Austin Trout and Canelo Alvarez promoted their fight in front of the Alamo.
Some boxing fans said it’s the perfect spot, because it draws people downtown.
“I think it will attract more people to come view it.” said San Antonio native Stephanie Santos.
The fight between Mayweather and Alvarez will take place in Las Vegas in September.
