Trainer wanted Marquez to retire
MANILA, Philippines ? Legendary boxing trainer Nacho Beristain said he doesn’t want to see his prized pupil Juan Manuel Marquez slug it out with Manny Pacquiao again as both boxers have already suffered tremendous punishment.
Beristain said that he wanted the 39-year-old Marquez to retire after his 6th-round knockout triumph against the Filipino boxer.
?That’s what I wanted for him, to retire and go to the sunset and look good,? the Mexican trainer told Radio Rahim.
Beristain said Marquez?s victory over Pacquiao should have ended his boxer?s journey in the professional ranks.
Instead, Marquez opted to challenge Timothy Bradley for the WBO welterweight crown for a chance to become the first Mexican to win five titles in five weight classes.
?He wants to go for a fifth title, he has more hunger in him, he knows his body,? said Beristain. ?He wants to continue his career and fight for Bradley.?
He said he has no choice but support Marquez?s decision.
?It’s the fighter who calls the shots. If it’s Juan Manuel’s decision, I’m gonna follow him through hell.?
Beristain said his support for Marquez might end if the latter decides to fight Pacquiao again.
The two boxers have already gone through four grueling bouts and Beristain could not bear the thought of having Marquez go through another Pacquiao bout again.
“[In] the fourth fight they’ve been punishing themselves a lot, I think this is enough.”
