Brooklyn, NY ? Paulie Malignaggi (32-5-0, 7KO), the defending WBA welterweight champion, lost his belt via split decision to the 23 year old, now 27 and 0 former lightweight and former junior welterweight champion of the world, Adrien Broner at the Barclays Center in New York tonight.
Broner, from Cincinnati, OH, was all smiles with his 18K teeth and his new belt. He said Paulie can?t hit him, and that he was only shadow boxing.
The two judges scored the fight 115-113 and 117-111 for Broner while the third judge had it 115-113 for Malignaggi.
It was clear that Malignaggi was the busier fighter as he tattooed Broner with his 467 jabs to only 106 jabs of Broner. Malignaggi threw a total 843 punches to Broner?s 524. But Broner was more efficient with 47% connect rate while Malignaggi only connected with 25% of his punches.
Power punches was the big difference for this fight as 418 out of 524 punches thrown by Broner were all power punches and he connected 51% of those.
