A Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight remains on life support, if you care to believe the Filipino’s adviser.
For the first time in years, Pacquiao was just an afterthought during a Mayweather fight week, as the latter cruised to a unanimous decision win over Robert Guerrero last month.
Coming off consecutive losses to Timothy Bradley Jr. (highly disputed) and Juan Manuel Marquez (a supreme knockout), Pacquiao’s star isn’t what it was in 2009, when negotiations first failed between he and Mayweather.
Pacquiao’s next fight is Nov. 24 against Brandon Rios in Macau, China.
Win that, adviser Michael Koncz says, and Mayweather may not have “any excuse” not to look at Pacquiao again.
“Floyd is always a possibility,” Koncz told RingTV. “We’ve always said that we would fight Floyd.
“I think that Manny will have to have an impressive win in light of comments that Floyd has made about Manny losing his last two fights, and I think that if Manny has an exciting and impressive win come November 24, then Floyd won’t have any excuse if he really wants to fight.”
Mayweather’s next fight is Sept. 14 against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. It’s his second bout in a potential six-fight deal with Showtime.
Pacquiao isn’t contractually tied to any network, but still is promoted by Top Rank and Bob Arum, who has an icy relationship with Golden Boy Promotions, which will be promoting its seventh consecutive Mayweather fight.
“If the fans still want to see this fight, we’re willing to do it,” Koncz said.
