Former two division champion Juan Manuel Lopez appeared on his way to the super featherweight division after suffering a second knockout loss to Orlando Salido last year. He fought two fights earlier this year at 128 pounds, leaving the door open for a possible return to the featherweight division.
A fight against newly crowned WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia was deemed too lucrative to pass up so on June 15 the two fighters will square off in Dallas, TX with Garcia’s title at stake. On a recent edition of BoxingScene Radio, Lopez told us that there is only one other fight that would entice him to stay at 126 pounds.
“It really depends on what happens in June. If I make 126 comfortably I would like to stay for one more fight versus Nonito Donaire. If not then I will move up,” Lopez revealed.
Donaire was a big favorite when he lost to Guillermo Rigondeaux in April. The 2012 Fighter of the Year had a tough time figuring out the Cuban and his moments of success were few and far between. Lopez said that he was surprised that Donaire was unable to make the necessary adjustments in the fight, especially after such a great 2012 campaign.
“It did surprise me honestly. I thought Rigondeaux had a complicated style but I thought Donaire would be okay. It was a tough fight but honestly Nonito didn’t look like he knew what to do in the ring. Guys like Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao always make the adjustments,” Juanma commented.
Donaire is looking to return this fall and if if Lopez were to pull of an upset on June 15th a Lopez-Donaire would be a possible October fight. Lopez insists that being the underdog doesn’t bother him and thinks that plenty of people will be picking him to defeat his Mexican-American opponent.
“It doesn’t bother me to be the underdog but I think the public is divided. I think there are a lot of people picking me to win as well,” Lopez told BoxingScene Radio.
