What was first announced on Floyd Mayweather?s Twitter page (@FloydMayweather) that a fight between he and the unified junior middleweight champion Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez, tentatively scheduled for September 14 in Las Vegas, was confirmed shortly thereafter by Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer.
?Signed, sealed, delivered,? said an excited Schaefer to Maxboxing on Wednesday evening. ??Canelo? was born ready. It was signed here in the office and we have a fight.?
This match-up, which will be the most anticipated of 2013, will take place at the MGM Grand and be distributed by Showtime. According to Schaefer, a catchweight of 152 pounds has been agreed upon by both parties.
When asked if this was a difficult deal to consummate, Schaefer stated, ?Well, it wasn?t easy but it was done. Big fights are never easy and this is the biggest fight in the sport you can make. It doesn?t get bigger than that. You have a fighter who is one of the most popular in Mexico and in the United States with a huge Hispanic fan-base against the pound-for-pound star. It?s as big as it gets. There?s no bigger one. This is the one.?
Schaefer says that plans for a multi-city press tour are still being finalized.
With this development, look for Top Rank to move the fight between Juan Manuel Marquez and Tim Bradley (scheduled for this same date at the Thomas and Mack Center) to October the 12th.
