Argentinian knockout artist Lucas Matthysse made quick, easy and violent work of Lamont Peterson in a non-title fight just above the light welterweight limit moments ago at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, stopping him in the third round. Peterson came out looking to box in the opening round but Matthysse?s pressure was relentless. Mid way through Round 2 Matthysse knocked Peterson down with a glancing left hook and the D.C. native elected to take his chances going toe to toe in order to hold the stronger man off. In Round 3 both fighters loaded up with left hooks in close and Matthysse?s got their first decking Peterson hard. He got up and fell again but was permitted to continue on very unsteady legs. Another left hook put Peterson down again the bout was waived off at the 2:14 mark of Round 3. With the dramatic knockout victory Matthysse moves to 34-2 (32 KOs) while Peterson slides to 31-2-1 (16 KOs). Matthysse is now poised to take on unified 140-pound champion Danny Garcia in an attractive match-up later this year. On the televised undercard, IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (25-1, 13 KOs) scored a seventh round stoppage of Lee Purdy (20-4-1, 13 KOs) despite an injured hand.
