Boxing superstar Floyd ?Money? Mayweather put on an absolute clinic looking as sharp as ever dominating Robert ?The Ghost? Guerrero moments ago at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas as seen live on Showtime PPV. It was a staggering display of accuracy and ring generalship from the reigning champion to secure a wide unanimous decision victory. The bout started out with both men in the centre of the ring, Guerrero looking to be busy and Mayweather picking his shots with a brilliant right hand lead. As was expected there was a great deal of holding and grappling in the early going with both men holding and hitting. Guerrero?s work rate made it competitive early on but Mayweather seemed to control the tempo and location in which they exchanged. The challenger started with more aggression in the third and the defending champion responded by beginning to use a lot more foot movement. Mayweather began to fight from distance and made further use of his sharply timed straight right hand which was the most eye catching weapon of either man in the early going.
In Round 4 Mayweather?s precision punching had Guerrero on alert and as a result he dialed down his aggression which allowed Floyd to fight at a much more comfortable pace. Guerrero seemed unable or unwilling to let his hands go in an attempt to pressure Mayweather and as a result it gave a decided edge to the defending champion.
It was pointed out by Showtime?s commentary staff that Guerrero typically averages seventy punches per round and was topping out at forty in the first half of this bout.
Guerrero upped his activity in the middle rounds but he had little success landing anything of note. He looked to press Floyd to the ropes but the adjustment from the champion was to effectively smother his man in close. Mayweather negated most of Guerrero?s attack and continued to land the much cleaner punches with sharp right hand leads.
In Round 8 Mayweather?s precision began to take it?s toll. Guerrero stopped coming forward and was cut by a punch early in the round. Mayweather planted his feet and started to really sit down on his right hands. In the final minute a big right rocked Guerrero who looked very unsteady and frustrated. It was noted that Mayweather landed 77 per cent of his power shots in the stanza.
Guerrero was bloody but responded with one of his better rounds in the ninth where he had some success pressing the action. Mayweather looked to smother and again responded with single sharp leads.
Floyd brought out his jab to begin the championship rounds and continued to find success dictating the timing and location of the fight. It was noted that after ten rounds Mayweather was landing power punches at a staggering 60+ per cent clip.
Mayweather continued to play the matador in the championship rounds and a shop worn Guerrero did his best to come forward but had nothing left on his punches. Mayweather continued to time his man closed the show with a flurry of flush punches.
After twelve rounds were complete the scores were read as 117-111 (x3) , all for Floyd ?Money? Mayweather? who finished the bout having landed 60 per cent of his total power punches thrown.
