MGM GRAND, Las Vegas – WBC welterweight champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather is just a day away from his showdown against Robert Guerrero. Over the past year Mayweather’s promotional company, Mayweather Promotions, has really taken off. In February, Ishe Smith became the first boxer fighting under Mayweather’s promotional banner to capture a world title. Five of Mayweather’s fighters will be featured on Saturday’s undercard including J’Leon Love’s bout against Gabriel Rosado that will be part of the televised pay-per-view portion of the card.
Mayweather said that his ultimate goal is for one of his fighters to surpass the greatness that he has achieved. He said that he continually strives to put his fighters in the best position possible so that they can be successful. The 36-year-old champion tries to pass down what he has learned in a career that has spanned 17 years and counting.
“My long term goals are that hopefully I have a fighter surpass me – as long as I am a part of it. I want to be a part of a fighter going to the pinnacle. Who wouldn’t want to be part of a fighter going to the top? I would love to be a part of it. The only thing I can do is keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best and constantly continue to put them in the best position possible. That is what it is about. I preach to them all the time. We sit down and I talk to them. I tell them things about my life, things that I learned at an early age. I want to help young fighters,” stated Mayweather.
The Las Vegas resident said the fact that he is a boxer, and one who is still active, sets him apart from other promoters. He said that he can relate to fighters because he can see things the same way that they can and at the same time he is cognizant of the business aspect of putting on a promotion.
“I always tell the fighters I can see things from both sides as far as a promoter and as a fighter. I can see it from the same vision they see out of because I fight just like they fight. Don King can’t see from a fighter’s point of view. Bob Arum can’t see from a fighter’s point of view – because they aren’t fighting. They are just promoters. To where as I believe in a fighter in the long run. That is what I believe,” Mayweather explained.
