Popular Mexican star Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez won a competitive unanimous decision victory over Austin ?No Doubt? Trout moments ago at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas as seen live on Showtime. Trout started out quickly at the bell opening up the first round throwing 30+ jabs. Canelo matched him with the lead stick in the second and the ensuing rounds became quite tactical as both men looked to lead with their jabs while throwing few follow up shots. It was close in the middle rounds with both men mixing in good body shots. Alvarez served up a statement to start the second half of the bout in Round 7 when he dropped Trout with a counter right hand over a jab early in the stanza. Trout recovered well and showed good resolve to come back in the later stages of the round. He upped his activity in the following rounds after the knockdown and while Canelo appeared to be outworked as a result he still landed the occasional right hand to keep Trout honest. After the eighth round Showtime announced that two of the three official judges (via open scoring) had Canelo ahead by wide scores setting the table for controversy. Trout, knowing he was behind, upped his activity level even further and was the busier man in the championship rounds. After twelve rounds were complete the scores were read as 115-112, 116-111 and a preposterous 118-109 all for Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez. The win saw the popular Mexican unify the WBA and WBC junior middleweight titles and move to 42-0-1 (32 KOs) while Trout slips to 26-1 (14 KOs).
