GENERAL SANTOS CITY?Two hundred boxers will show their wares starting today at the opening of the first Manny Pacquiao National Amateur Boxing tournament at the Oval Plaza Covered Court here.
Seeing action are young fighters from Mandaluyong City, Iloilo, Bacolod, Zamboanga, Cebu, Malaybalay, Panabo, Camiguin Province, Davao City, Digos, North Cotabato, Tulunan, South Cotabato, Koronadal, Sarangani Province, Jose Abad Santos, Cagayan de Oro, Metro Dadiangas and host General Santos City.
?Two boxing rings will be used to finish the four-day event on Dec. 20,? said Rey Golingan, president of the organizing Amateur Boxing Association of the Phils. (Abap) GenSan Chapter.
At stake are boxing equipment worth more than P100,000. The team champion will receive boxing equipment worth P50,000 plus a trophy, while the first runner-up will get P30,000 worth of boxing equipment and a trophy. The second and third runners-up will also earn boxing equipment worth P20,000 and P10,000, respectively, with trophies.
Medals will be awarded to the winners of the 10 different weight categories from the 32 kilogram to the 51 kilogram.
Manny Pacquiao, who turns 28 years old today, will give an inspirational message at 1 p.m. Also gracing the opening are Mayor Pedro Acharon and American boxing agent Michael Konz.
