WILL OSCAR?S COMPANY SELL STOCK SOON?
Los Angeles, CA-Most of the big news coming out of California these days is coming from the office of Golden Boy Promotions. To say that Oscar De La Hoya is grabbing up fighters faster that they can be announced is no understatement. And with this move to acquire bodies/power, De La Hoya is sending a message out that boxing, at least at GBP anyways, is alive and well! Word is that Oscar is doing so well that Golden Boy Promotions will go public, and be part of the New York Stock Exchange or NASDAQ soon.
PACQUIAO-BARRERA IS THE MOST WANTED FIGHT
With GBP grabbing Manny Pacquiao*, and already having Marco Antonio Barrera, this pairing would be one of the biggest fights in recent fistic history. But as you?ll reads later, the Pacquiao deal with GBP is iffy! HBO?s Larry Merchant, he tells me that Marco is not afraid of the Pacman. And while I think Barrera is out of his mind, Larry feels that the many distractions Marco endured prior to meeting Pacquiao, having his training turned upside down in Big Bear, CA, by a forest fire. Then there was the news that he had undergone a brain operation, oh, and he had just switched promoters.
DISTRACTIONS DON?T TAKE AWAY ?MONEY? PUNCH!
Forget for just a second that the Pacman beat Marco via stoppage in eleven heats. Don?t take into consideration that Manny has established himself as the most formidable puncher at 130 lbs. And please, do not take into account the fact that Manny?s left cross, is the ?money? punch in boxing. Even though Juan Manuel Marquez went 12, he was dropped thrice early. Losing 7-5 in rounds to Erik Morales, and with a cut, Manny has drilled Erik twice in succession.
PAC CAN HAVE MARQUEZ & BARRERA FOR LUNCH!
The Pacman of November 18 against the Marquez of November 25, they don?t even compare. Based on their most recent fights, how could any handicapper pick Barrera, or Marquez for that matter to beat Manny Pacquiao? Back to Manny-Marco II, this is a battle of true stars, with Marco?s fading and Pacquiao shooting! Barrera is better off going to 135 lbs., and facing Juan Diaz for the WBA belt. Here again, I think he gets licked. But at least Barrera is spared the embarrassment of being reduced to boxing rubble once more.
OSCAR & FLOYD TO DO AROUND 1.3 MILLION HOMES!
Did I forget to mention that Oscar has apparently come to terms with Floyd Mayweather to fight May 5, 2007? This alone should be the top boxing pay per view event of the year. But what comes with all of this power? A fortnight ago we saw Washington DC get turned on its ear because one player controlled the game of politics. Would De La Hoya be any different than some of the other despicable characters that have sent the sport to an all-time low? Most are of the opinion he will!
EVEN DE LA HOYA HAS ?TALKING POINTS?
Every time you hear the Oscar De La Hoya ?talking points,? you will always find the word, ?transparency.? De La Hoya feels that his bringing fighters into the firm, names like Shane Mosley, Bernard Hopkins, Winky Wright and Barrera, this is excellent window dressing. And once guys get in the GBP door, they are offered deals in which GBP takes less money than the ?other? promoters. The benefits are you?ve got Oscar up front, you?re making money, and you as a fighter feel that you are actually involved with decisions involving your career. Sounds like a winning formula!
THAT ?*? AFTER MANNY PACQUIAO?S NAME
The asterisk I inserted in the first paragraph after Manny Pacquiao is there for a reason. The latest Julio Cesar Chavez imitator, (meaning he signs anything, including contracts, put in front of him) has inked promotional pacts with three different entities. When it?s all said and done, a trainer, co-managers, three promoters, how much is left? According to HBO?s Larry Merchant, Pacman has signed with a promoter based in Manila. Add both Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions to the mix and you?ve got three!
HOW IS THE PACMAN CASH PIE CUT UP?
Figure Freddie Roach is in for a 10% as trainer. Co-manager Shelly Finkel gets 25 %, while Nick Kahn and Keith Davidson split 5%. And then there are the three promoters. Although some couldn?t grasp this when I said the following on ?Ring Talk Radio.? That being this, if Top Rank has a legal contract, conceivably GBP could have one too. Thus Pacquiao, all the while fighting for Top Rank, would have to pay Oscar?s company a promotional cut of the Pacquiao pie.
SHOULD GET $15 MILLION TO OPEN MACAO IN STYLE
Bob Arum?s Top Rank inked a pact with the Wynn Hotel in Macao, and is in a position to give Manny more money than anyone could ever imagine. And he wouldn?t have to pay any US tax on the $15 million he could get from Steve Wynn?s casino to put that resort island on the map. Having been part of a TV team that set historical precedent for being the first to televise a fight in Beijing in ?93, and then again in 1994 in Macao, I can tell you that the Chinese know five stars, as does casino mogul Steve Wynn. Eight figures for Pacquiao in Macao!
HOW IS THE PACMAN CASH PIE CUT UP II?
But what good is making all that money and ending up with 20 cents on the dollar, and that?s before taxes? Speaking of, Manny still has money (tax) issues with the U.S. Internal Revenue dating back to when he was with promoter Murad Muhammad.
FIRST STOP ON TYSON TOUR MADE MONEY!
Somebody asked me last week, did Mike Tyson fight recently? The answer to that was no, and no! The reason being, Mike Tyson did not fight Corey Sanders, an overweight sparring partner with eyesight problems. That was an, ?exhibition,? a sparring match no less. At the same time, a gym mate chimed in that he had bought the Tyson program and nearly soiled his shorts once he realized he had spent real-money to watch Mike Tyson, play-fight! Fat, and obviously not in any serious condition, Tyson wore a tee shirt!
WILL TYSON WORLD TOUR CONTINUE AS PLANNED?
With better than 4,000 paid, and 40,000 homes on PPV, Tyson, who was to have received $250,000, got paid. There was NO merit to the rumor that Mike refused to come out of the dressing room unless he was given an additional $100 K. According to those involved with the arena, Tyson was happy and outgoing throughout the week in Pennsylvania. As for there being a second stop on the Tyson World Tour, unless some rich guy in Canada, Europe, or Asia is willing to lose upwards of a half million U.S. dollars, the Tyson tour might come to an abrupt end after one showing. Then again, to steal a line from P.T. Barnum, ?There?s a sucker born ever minute!?
