DONDON ?Supremo? Sultan is relishing every moment of winning the World Boxing Federation (WBF) welterweight title last Saturday at the Suntec International Convention Center in Singapore.
Sultan beat Australian Eddie ?Psycho? Delic for the vacant belt in a fight marked by a heated trade of punches all throughout, via unanimous decision.
?Winning this belt is very sweet, especially that was not feeling well in the entire fight,? Sultan told reporters during the victory party thrown by Cebu boxing patron Antonio Lopez Aldeguer, Monday night at the Grand Convention Center.
Sultan, who is fighting under the SGG Stable, revealed he was not in top condition when he fought Delic for 12 rounds.
Energy drink
?I drank an energy drink an hour before my fight. And I felt bad, I felt like vomiting and I could not sweat it out. No matter how hard I tried to sweat out with the punch mitts, still I couldn?t get it off. That?s why when I entered the ring I felt like vomiting,? said the 28-year-old fighter from Labason, Zamboanga del Norte.
However, he no longer felt nauseous when the bell rang.
?Had I been in top condition, I could have knocked him (Delic) out. He was a very easy opponent who played dirty,? Sultan added after showing a small cut under his left eye.
Dave Hedgecock scored it 117-113, Hengtrakul 115-112 and Oomsin Wattanakul tallied 115-112, all for Sultan. Delic was deducted a point for pushing Sultan down to the canvass on the fifth round.
Proud
?I had him all the time, but I just can?t put him down, probably because of what I had during the fight. But nevertheless I am still very proud of myself, proud for my country, that even winning a lesser prestigious title, I am still a world champion,? stressed Sultan.
Sultan improved his ring record to 14-7-2, 7KOs as he now aims to fight in a bigger arena?the United States of America.
?I only have one request for him before I?ll let him fight in the US?get rid of his bad attitude during practice. He seemed like always toying around every practice ?he should get serious,? Aldeguer advised.
Sultan?s manager Sammy Gello-ani still has an agreement with an outfit that promotes ?small? fights in Las Vegas.
