MEXICAN World Boxing Organization (WBO) superflyweight champion Fernando Montiel has one more option to avoid No. 1 challenger Z ?The Dream? Gorres for the world title championship?that is to vacate his title and move up to the bantamweight division.
This came after the Cebu-based SGG Sports Promotions won the purse bidding at the WBO Headquarters Puerto Rico yesterday, outbidding the other interested promoters that include Bob Arum?s Top Rank Promotions.
?We won the bid. Top Rank bid (for) $125,000 while our bid was $126,000,? said ALA Boys manager Antonio Lopez Aldeguer in a text message.
If Montiel would vacate the title, Gorres will fight the fighter ranked behind him?Pramuansak Pho-suwan of Thailand.
Promoter?s say
?We planned to hold the (championship) fight (here) in the Philippines, but Golden Boy Promotions will have a say as they are our promoters,? added Aldeguer.
Tagbilaran City Mayor Dan Neri Lim earlier announced that the fight would be held in Araneta Coliseum next year but it would be too early to consider if GBP executives will decide otherwise.
Both Gorres and Montiel are under contract with the Golden Boy but upon hearing the refusal of the Mexican champion to accept the offer laid down by the outfit owned by Oscar De La Hoya, GBP decided to leave the matters to Team Gorres.
Montiel was ordered by the WBO to make a mandatory defense against Gorres during the WBO Convention held last October.
Arrangements
Changes might be relayed in a few days after Cebuano promoter Sammy Gello-ani makes arrangements with GBP.
Gello-ani is currently in Tampa Bay, Florida to accompany ALA Boy Rey ?Boom-Boom? Bautista, who is scheduled to fight on Dec. 2 (Dec. 3 RP time) against Brazilian champion Giovanni Andrade underneath the Winky Wright-Ike Quartey fight.
If Golden Boy Promotions will give a free hand to Team Gorres, the fight will be held in January at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City. The card will be packed with Filipino talents, possibly those who are under promotional contract with GBP.
Montiel is carrying a 32-2-1 win-loss-draw slate with 24 knockouts while the Mandaue City native Gorres is holding a 26-1-1 slate with 14 KOs.
