GENERAL SANTOS CITY ? The city government rolls out the red carpet for its most admired, world-renowned son today as Manny Pacquiao returns to his hometown eight days after he demolished Mexican legend Erik Morales in their rubber match in Las Vegas.
City Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr. will lead the welcoming party at the city?s international airport, and thousands more are expected to line up the streets where the motorcade will pass through in a day-long celebration.
A musical band and street party groups will welcome Pacquiao and family members who are expected to fly in at 9 a.m. from Manila.
Avel Manansala, from the Office of the City Mayor, said they expect a bigger crowd in today?s arrival honors for Pacquiao with those from the various private sectors and organizations and the students invited to join the festivities.
“Surely, more people, fans and supporters will troop to the streets after Mayor Acharon urged the private sector to join in the homecoming celebration,” said Manansala.
City Police director Alfredo Toroctocon said all precinct commanders have been directed to ensure peace and order. The motorcade will pass through barangays Fatima, Tambler, Labangal, Dadiangas West and the city?s business district.
A similar parade greeted Pacquiao in Manila upon his return from Los Angeles last Friday, capping the day-long celebration with a street party at the Baywalk.
After the parade, Pacquiao will proceed to the city hall for lunch hosted by the GenSan Tuna Association.
Meanwhile, project engineer Boy dela Cruz said they are now rushing the work on Pacquiao?s multi-million house in Barangay Lagao in time for its scheduled Dec. 17 blessing.
