Zamboanga to host RP boxing federation title fight

PREPARATIONS are underway for the Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) flyweight championship to be held on December 8, 2006, at the government-owned coliseum in this city.

Games and Amusement Board (GAB) regional head Rogelio San Juan said reigning PBF champion Jojo Bardon of the Cebu-based Wakee Salud Stable will slug it out with challenger Bert Gawat of Valencia City?s Larry Llanares Stable in the main event.

San Juan said the title bout is promoted by the Blue Stallion Promotions of Congressman Erico Basilio Fabian and sanctioned by GAB.

?This is the official revival of professional boxing in this city,? Fabian said of the PBF title bout to be held here.

Two 10-round matches that would feature PBF top ranked flyweight boxers would serve as under card events to the Bardon-Gawat championship fight.

San Juan said PBF number 1 contender Ritchie Mipranum of Mayor Jojo Lopez Stable of Maasim, Sarangani province, will fight against PBF number 2 contender Dave Cris, of Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay (Rey Paciones Stable) and PBF number 6 boxer Allan Dugang of Jimenez, Misamis Occidental (Bernard Yu Stable) will slug it out against PBF number 7 contender of Lopez Stable as the under card events.

The other events, like two six-round matches, five four-round fights that would see action featherweights and light-flyweights boxers from this city, Basilan, Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga del Sur will serve as curtain raisers.

San Juan, who was named as GAB regional head two months ago, said the revival of boxing here is aimed to discover individuals who have the potentials to become professional boxers and may bring honor to the country.

He believes that several individuals in this city and in the region have the potential to become professional boxers, but do not have the chances to show and enhance their talents and skills.

Boxing is a kind of sports that Filipinos have greater chances to excel as the fights are measured in weighs and not in heights.
