Most fighters would like to retire on a winning note, but it rarely happens. Mexico’s Jorge Arce (61-7-2, 46KOs) was hoping to retire with a big win. Instead he was knocked out in three rounds by WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire on December 15th in Texas. Arce retired after the match was over.
At 33-years-old, Arce is still young in a sport where most of the current stars are close to his age or several years older. He turned pro in 1996 and went through several wars over the years.
Arce does not regret his quick decision to retire. In 2011, Arce promised his family that he would walk away by the end of 2012.
“I lost to the best. [For Donaire] I prepared better than I’ve ever prepared in the past. I had a motivation that I never felt in the past. I did everything perfect…the training was perfect. I was very explosive and strong, and tried everything but my body would not respond and the truth is – it was the right time to say goodbye. I could not do much of anything with Donaire. My mind was ready, but my body could not do it,” Arce said.
“When my son Jorgito was born, I promised my wife that when he was a year old – I would retire – and precisely on December 15 it marked one year and I fulfilled what I promised and I retired. Now I get to watch my children grow up along with my wife, whom I love, and they are the backbone of my life. I thank God that I’m mentally and physically well. I thank God for what he has given me, for giving me the talent to box.”
