On Tuesday at SecondsOut.com, Special Features Writer Tim Smith penned an interesting and honest piece titled “Only Action Can Save Boxing” that looked at the harsh reality if boxing doesn’t give the public what it wants to see. Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum couldn’t agree more.
“I just read a story at SecondsOut.com by Tim Smith, who also writes for the New York Daily News, that really rang a bell,” he explained, during a media conference call. “It said that unless boxing starts presenting action fights that thrill the customers like last Saturday’s Pacquiao verus Morales fight, then boxing is doomed. It asks the promoters and the networks to make sure that what is presented to the public are action fights. Fights that thrill the customers.”
Arum declared that his double-header on Showtime on December 2 in Atlantic City, featuring Miguel Cotto vs. Carlos Quintana and Antonio Margarito vs. Joshua Clottey in separate welterweight world title fights, will meet that criteria.
“We are presenting two tremendous action fights,” he said, “there won’t be any pauses. There will be non-stop action and the people watching the show will see two great fights.”
