8CountNews sat down with Hector Camacho Jr this evening and got his thoughts on the untimely passing of his dad. As most boxing fans already know, his father was killed in a shooting which took place in Puerto Rico.
Hector is coping with all of this rather well but he admits, it’s tough. His father is no doubt a legend in the sport of boxing and his family, his fans, and the sport of boxing will miss him. Jr is frank about all of this. He tells 8CN that the streets are no place for anyone. The streets are dangerous, and Jr said it best, ?The only thing in the streets is drugs, girls, alcohol, jail, or death.?
8CN ? Jr it’s been tough for you. How are you doing man?
HCJ ? I’m hanging in there. Staying strong and positive because my father wouldn’t want it any other way.
8CN ? Can you share with the fans anything about how all of this all happened?
HCJ ? You know what Brad, I wasn’t there but I will say this. When you are in the streets anything can happen. The only thing in the streets is drugs, girls, alcohol, jail, or death. You can be in the wrong place at the wrong time, which perhaps was the case with my father. You live by the sword you die by the sword. I hope what happened to pops sends a message to the kids out there. I hope this sends a message to the kids that the streets are bad, you know? Live life as we are supposed to according to God’s law, and the world will be a much better place.
8CN ? What’s the latest news about the people that did this to your father?
HCJ – They locked up two guys and one is in custody now. I’m flying back on Friday. I have a contract to fight in Atlanta, so I have to talk to the commission about that. Who in their right mind wants to fight after losing their father you know? If I have to fight I will, it’s in my blood. It is what it is.
8CN ? Mentally are you OK to fight?
HCJ ? Well when this all happened, I kept going to the gym to keep my mind off of it. When I argue with my wife, I’ll run 10 miles. It’s my way of escaping from the world. It’s how I escape.
8CN ? I heard some of your relatives got into a scuffle at the funeral.
HCJ ? Yea, well that’s just being part of the Camacho family man (laughs). My father isn’t the only crazy mother #*$er in the family (laughs). I don’t even remember how it all happened. I remember one time me and my dad, and my Uncle fought on the same show, and my father and my Uncle got into a fight (laughing). You know what Brad, how many families don’t have these things happen sometimes you know?
8CN ? It was a very tough decision for the family to remove your pop from life support. Talk about that if you can.
HCJ ? I am a strong believer in Allah. I kept my position on this, I was firm. I believe in God, and I believe in his words, thou shalt not kill. I believe in Allah, and I believe in miracles. Let my dad fight until the last bell rings, he’s a fighter! Who are we, or am I to take a life away? I fought until the last round, but they decided to take him off life support.
8CN ? How is your grandma doing?
HCJ ? She is strong, you know? It’s quoted in the Koran that God tests us with loss of life, property, and we go through this. It’s tough, but it’s life.
8CN ? Tell the fans something that they may not know about your dad.
HCJ ? He had a great heart. The guy was unbelievable. He would take the last shirt off of his back for you. The fans loved him. He had the same kind of charisma that Sugar Ray had. My dad was famous around the world. I did an interview with Al Jazeera, and me being a Muslim, that’s huge. I have the burden on my shoulder now. I never gave a hundred percent Brad. I didn’t come into boxing to be my father, I came into boxing to make a name for myself, and this woke me up. I will fight now with my fathers spirit. I am giving 100 percent.
8CN ? So you definitely feel more responsibility to go forward in the ring with that Camacho name?
HCJ ? Big time.
