Mexican trainer Ignacio ?Nacho?Beristain, whose boxer Juan Manuel Marquez squares off with Manny Pacquiao on May 8 in Las Vegas, has a reputation of being the scourge of Filipino boxers.
Beristain was largely responsible for the rise to immortality of Ricardo Lopez, who went on to make 22 successful defenses of the World Boxing Council strawweight crown, including wins over Filipinos Pretty Boy Lucas, Manny Melchor, Andy Tabanas and Ala Villamor.
Beristain also brought his charm to Guty Espadas Jr., who bested Luisito Espinosa in a fight for the vacant WBC featherweight diadem in Merida in April 2000.
Beristain also worked the corner of other topnotch Mexican world champions like Gilberto Roman and Victor Rabanales, who each victimized a Filipino challenger in major title fights.
