Mercito Gesta heartbroken after loss, but there?s still time to bounce back

Earlier tonight, inside of the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, previously undefeated lightweight hopeful Mercito ?No Mercy? Gesta was unsuccessful in attempting to lift the IBF lightweight championship from defending champion Miguel Vazquez.

In an awkward bout, Vazquez controlled much of the action, nullifying Gesta?s attack with simple movement and enough straight punches to build up a sizeable lead on the scorecards. The left-handed Gesta simply wasn?t able to get into a rhythm outside of a few vaunted left hands.

Scorecards reading 119-109, 118-110, and 117-111 were all in Vazquez?s favor.

After paying a few visits to Gesta?s training camp in the mountains of Big Bear, Calif., I can attest that the spirits where high as he worked under his trainer Vince Parra and his father Anectio, with his mother and brother also intently watching on and offering support.

Shortly after the bout, I ran across Gesta as he was making his exit from the Garden Arena. The 25-year old?s face told a tale of disappointment and heartbreak. Not many words were exchanged by us, as I simply gave the young contender a hug and told him he would be back.

Gesta shook his head in agreement but now the loss is simply too big of a pill to swallow for any positive feelings to be present

Gesta?s record now stands at 26-1-1 with 14 knockouts while Vazquez improves to 33-3 with 13 stoppages.

At the moment, we are moments away from the evening’s main event, the fourth encounter between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez.
