Pacman sharp in 30-minute roadwork

LAS VEGAS ? Under the extreme cold, Manny Pacquiao hit the road early Monday morning and looked good during a bristling 30-minute run at the UNLV track stadium here.

Pacquiao had three layers of jackets, a pair of sweat pants and running shoes when he left the Wynn Hotel before 7 a.m. for the daily exercise he?d done religiously for two months now.

Temperature here in Vegas has been anywhere near 10 degrees over the past days.

Pacquiao, who arrived in this Sin City Sunday afternoon, circled the oval 13 times and was joined by Filipino trainers Buboy Fernandez and Nonoy Neri, and fellow boxer Arnel Fontanilla.

But none among his companions could keep pace with the boxing superstar.

“Mabilis talaga tumakbo (He really runs fast),” said Neri.

“Yes, he runs like a deer,” added Rob Peters, a regular staff at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles who dabbles as Pacquiao?s close-in bodyguard whenever he?s in the US.

Peters flew to Manila when Pacquiao fought and defeated Oscar Larios of Mexico at the Araneta Coliseum last July 2.

In Los Angeles, Pacquiao takes his routine run at the Griffith Park where the hilly, roller-coaster trail gives the 27-year-old southpaw some extra challenge.

From the UNLV campus, Pacquiao and company drove back Wynn Hotel and up to his 300-square meter suite for breakfast of rice and nilagang baka (beef).

Pacquiao was back in bed by 11 a.m. and got up after an hour, just in time for his 2 p.m. workout at the nearby IBA Gym. He met his American manager Shelly Finkel before taking off.

Pacquiao will hold a press workout Tuesday at the same gym owned by former major league player Dean Chance. Wednesday and Thursday will be a closed-door workout.

“Very light workouts until Thursday and just a little walk on Friday, the day of the weigh-in. He?s okay,” said Neri.
