Nonito Donaire has been told to be on guard as Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum is working diligently to pit him against Mexican daredevil Jorge Arce on Dec. 15 fight in Mexico City.
A formal announcement could be made as early as Monday and Donaire said that even though he is coming off a win last week and nursing a hand injury, the Filipino-American believes he can whip himself into shape for the rough and durable Arce in about six weeks.
?I am still in shape,? Donaire told a handful of scribes during a press conference about his upcoming movie Palad Ta Ang Nagbuot (Our Fate Decides), a Visayan film that will be released on Oct. 31.
Donaire, accompanied by his wife Rachel and joined on the dais by ABS-CBN executive Peter Musngi after arriving from the US, said he will immediately return to San Francisco as soon as an Arce fight is confirmed by Arum to begin the initial phase of his training.
Donaire said the wound that he suffered on his left hand would not pose as a problem after consulting with his doctor in the US.
?He told me that it?ll be fine and it?s just that I punch really hard,? said Donaire.
Donaire stopped Toshiaki Nishioka last Oct. 13 in Los Angeles and is raring to get back into action to prove that he truly ranks among the world?s very best.
Donaire had actually sent statement with his Nishioka victory and the whole world heard it loud and clear.
A few days ago, Arce had a mouthful to say about Donaire?s destruction of Nishioka, stressing that most of the fighters Donaire had beaten were scared stiff.
Arce said Donaire doesn?t faze him and he is looking forward to the day when he gets the chance to show his stuff.
?Those are just words,? said Donaire, who didn?t want to get affected by Arce?s scathing remarks.
After all, ?Arce?s style is tailor-made for me,? said Donaire.
