Sources in New York have informed us that four-division world champion Erik Morales has tested positive for a banned substance just days before his scheduled rematch with unified jr. welterweight champion Danny Garcia this Saturday, October 20, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Details are sketchy at this point, and it’s unclear as to which banned substance Morales tested positive for, however, for now, it appears the bout will move forward as scheduled.
[UPDATE] As expected, Morales is denying that he took any banned substance. FightHype.com can confirm, however, that his A sample did indeed come up positive. Both camps are currently waiting on results from the B sample, which are expected to be back some time early tomorrow morning. Should the B sample in fact turn out to be positive, it’s unclear if the bout will actually take place, as Garcia’s trainer and father, Angel, may instruct his son not to fight.
[UPDATE] Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has just confirmed to Rick Reeno of Boxingscene.com and Lem Satterfield of RingTV.com that Erik Morales did indeed test positive for a banned substance.
