Hello, welcome back to another week of Ask the Champ Mailbag. I have to say that this week I am in a lot better mood than last week, even though I still have not received any news from Don King or the WBA. I have just decided to not waste my energy, and focus on the important things, which are my health and my family. I am not saying that my career is not important; I just will take care of that matter in my own way.
There is a lot of movement going on in boxing right now besides me of course, but nonetheless it is good for boxing. I enjoyed the fights over the weekend with Floyd Mayweather, JR., defeating Carlos Baldomir, and Shannon Briggs winning the WBO Heavyweight Title against Sergei Liakhovich. I look forward to RSRTV and “The Boxing Show” covering this.

I agree, but the problem is Ricardo Mayorga is suspended for failing a drug test after the Oscar De La Hoya fight, and if he chickened out in our first encounter, he won’t fight me now, and, believe me, Cory Spinks wants no part of me.

I say no because I am not a natural 168 pounder, and plus what is fighting me going to do for Calzaghe? Most critics will blast him for fighting a smaller opponent and if, by chance, I beat him, that will tarnish his reputation. It’s a lose-lose situation for Calzaghe, but thanks for the gesture.

I will tell you to start looking for another fighter to watch and support because I do not see Mike Tyson fighting for a world title again. Not that you can’t support Tyson in his 4 round exhibition matches, but really do you really want to do that? I will say that if by some miracle Tyson joins back with Don King, I would bet my house that Tyson would be fighting Valuev. Now wouldn’t that be a laugh?

I am a bit confused on what the Ring Magazine’s People’s Champ status really is.
Take the Pacman as an example, at times he is presented as a two time world champion for winning belts in the Flyweight and Junior Featherweight division and at times he is introduced as 3 time world champ counting the Ring’s citation when he admonished then people’s champ MAB in the Featherweight division and held it until he decided to move up to the Super Featherweight division.
What is your opinion on this? For me, I guess the Ring Magazine’s belt should be counted for we all know that such award is given without prejudice to any boxer’s background but rather given for the kind of oppositions one took and how he performed on those. unlike those ABC belts wherein so much politics are involved.
More power to you and I’m hoping that you’d be given the big breaks that you rightfully deserve.

First I want to say thank you for your support and well wishes. I like the Ring Magazine Belt, and what they stand for, but there is no way you can count it as a world title. It is what it is. If a fighter wins a belt that says world champion and is one of the recognized titles, then that is considered a world championship, even though now more and more titles are starting to be recognized. Just look at Mayweather defending his IBO World Title and also fighting for Baldomirs WBC World Title. There are a lot of titles out there. Ring sells magazines and if they feel that they have the true opinion of what fighter the champion should be then that is fine, but it doesn’t make them a world champion.

You have to give credit to a fighter that has over 100 fights; I think 116 to be exact. Elorde was fighting before I was born, so obviously I never saw him fight, but looking at his stats and his record, he looked like he was very good, but also fought maybe a little too long. I think the 27 losses on his record are very deceiving.

Good question and right now I do not have the answer, but I will lean towards watching Pacquiao sending Barrera into retirement.
