Boxing is a business, and Robert Garcia is certainly not the first trainer that has taken on the task of taking on a fighter and preparing him for battle against one of his former wards. That said, it’s still somewhat discomforting.
Can you imagine Freddie Roach training Timothy Bradley or Floyd Mayweather, Jr. against Manny Pacquiao? Or to a more comparable extent, how about Garcia training Guillermo Rigondeaux against Nonito Donaire, Jr.?
When Hernan “Tyson” Marquez (34-2-0, 25 KOs) climbs up the ring on Sept. 29th at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, against WBO flyweight kin Brian “The Hawaiian Punch” Viloria (31-3-0, 18 KOs), he will do so with Garcia as his head trainer. Garcia, who had a successful run with Viloria which began in 2008 after his loss to Edgar Sosa, helped resurrect the Hawaiian-Filipino’s career and capture his second world title against Ulises Solis a little over a year after. Garcia has taken in Marquez for his fight against Viloria.

For various reasons, the Viloria-Garcia tandem split a year after their biggest win. Garcia told this scribe at the time that the reason was due to scheduling conflicts among other disagreements, which Viloria’s camp vehemently denied (STORY HERE). Both have been successful after parting ways, but now find themselves at a crossroads aiming at besting the other.
For the heck of it, both camps have maintained professionalism and have put past indiscretions aside. It isn’t Garcia who will be fighting Viloria on top of the ring after all. The fact, however, that Garcia has closely worked with Viloria for a significant amount of time gives Marquez an edge in scouting that may very well be the difference the capable Mexican needs to win.
Marquez is trying to avoid falling a third time to a Filipino boxer. His previous two losses came at the hands of Filipinos Richie Mepranum, and Nonito Donaire, Jr., and did not look all that impressive in his last fight against Filipino Fernando Lumacad in a super flyweight bout that he won via majority decision.
