On Tuesday, August 21st, I caught up with Argentina’s Sergio ‘Maravilla’ Martinez in Ventura, California, as he trained for his September 15th duel with WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Having moved his camp to the Knuckleheadz Gym, the same building former champ Victor Ortiz calls home, Martinez didn’t look anything close to his 37 years of age as all of his skills were on display in what he called a ‘light’ workout session. What was obvious during Martinez’s regimen was just how much focus he put into his mobility, as he admits he fully plans to use his speed and angles to create a troubling night for the young champion.
Still, Martinez was quick to remind me that he is also planning on doing a lot of ‘damage’ to Chavez Jr. in their scheduled clash at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
