A week after his sensational 9th round stoppage win over Ty Barnett on ESPN Friday Night Fights, I caught up with unbeaten lightweight rising star Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta (26-0-1, 14 KOs) to talk about his big win and his plans moving forward.
Gesta admitted to me that he had some anger inside him coming to the fight after Barnett had trashed him in the media calling him “overrated” and belittling his boxing skills.
“I got carried away a little bit. Like I said, I like it when my opponent talks, so when I was in there I was hot and I was like ‘you know what I’ll make you feel my power’, because he said I was a small lightweight, so he probably thought I was small and I can’t punch,” Gesta told me.
Unfortunately, Gesta’s anger also got in the way of his game plan, as he admittedly forgot to go to the body and opted to headhunt more than he and his team planned. “I forgot (laughing). I only threw a few shots to the body thinking ‘I’m going to knock you out’, but I know I should’ve been more calm; I was just mad in there,” Gesta said.
