Guerrero wins, but is he really ready for 147?- Last night, Robert ? The Ghost? Guerrero beat up on tough as nails, Selcuk Aydin for the WBC interim welterweight strap. The question coming in was if Guerrero was going to be able to take his power from 135 up to 147. After watching the fight, the answer for me is NO. Guerrero was still very busy, throwing over 900 punches, but the shots thrown did not have enough mustard on them. Aydin is a very tough fighter that held his own, and because of that, Guerrero deserves a lot of respect for taking on a beast like Aydin for his first fight at 147. Guerrero reminds me of the other ghost, Kelly Pavlik, Pavlik had the pop at 160 but if you look at Pavlik now at 168, the extra pop is no longer present. I for one, am a big Guerrero fan, after all, it?s not hard to want to root for the kid. Guerrero, just like his strong wife, is a born fighter. The Ghost from Gilroy puts it all on the line, so I understand the move to 147. You see at 147, you have Floyd Mayweather Jr. right there for you to call out and cash out so that your family can be secure for the rest of your lives. So from a financial point of view, I see that same bridge. I understand your vision, but I would much rather see you win for winning than to see you win for losing. Against Floyd Mayweather Jr., you would lose, and lose bad. But your bank account would win, win really big. If you head south to 140, your chances of winning increase. At 140, you would have Danny Garcia, who just might be the hottest 140 pounder in the world right now. The fight would be very easy to make, a Puerto Rican/American versus a Mexican/American, and both fighters are promoted by Golden Boy Promotions. Even a fight against a Victor Ortiz would be welcomed here. Ortiz knows a thing or two about facing Floyd. But as I mentioned before, money talks a sweet game, and none talk it sweeter than the man they call Money.
Adrien Broner, is a real BIG problem- Last week as I sat there and watched Adrien Broner demolish Vicente Escobedo, I said to myself, there is no way that ANYBODY at 135 can test this guy. Only the winner between Antonio DeMarco and John Molina would be able to test Broner. As much as I like Gamboa, I feel that not even Gamboa would be able to beat Broner. Broner is just too big, strong, and too fast for any of those guys to cope with. Gamboa has more speed than Broner, but my eyes tell me that Broner is quicker, quickness comes from the mind. It?s like Pacquiao and Mayweather, Pacquiao has more speed than Floyd because Pacquiao can fire shots out like a muchine gun, but Mayweather is much quicker with his mind so the 1-2 rejects the fire trying to come in. Broner will have to go to 140 if he really wants to challenge himself, at 140 the sea is very, very deep. For right now, Broner is a huge problem, but we will not be able to see how big of a problem he really is until he tests the waters at 140.
Chavez Jr. versus Martinez- As we head into August, September is right around the corner. The closer we get to September, and the more confused I become. As of right now, I can?t lie, it?s a 50-50 fight for me. So please write in and help me out.
Canelo Alvarez/Josesito Lopez (pictured above)- The more thought that I give Lopez, the more and more that I think about this clash. Canelo is going to have to catch Lopez with an iceburg of a shot and catch Lopez cold, because Lopez has no retreat in him at all. Lopez just may have the biggest balls in boxing and will give it his very all to prove all the doubters wrong once again. If Lopez can produce another Rocky moment, we might as well then hand him the fighter of the year award over to him immediately after the fight. Canelo better not sleep on Lopez, the same way that Victor Ortiz did. Come September 15th, heart, will, and guts will all be on display.
The return of Jose Benavidez Jr.- Phoenix?s very own, Jose Benavidez Jr. will return to action on August 4th at the Texas Station Casino in Las Vegas against Raul Tovar. I recently spoke with Junior and he tells me that training camp is going great and he is more than ready to put on a great show come August 4th. The boxing phenom will look to improve his flawless record to 16-0. Last night, we just saw Shawn Porter break through with a big win over Alfonso Gomez, there is no doubt in my mind that we are a few fights away from seeing Benavidez do the very same thing. The time is almost here, time to shine like a diamond.
