FOR years now since Donnie Nietes has been itching for a dream fight with Roman Gonzalez, and his wish may come true as Gonzalez?s handlers have inquired about the 30-year-old World Boxing Organization (WBO) light flyweight champion?s availability for the coming months.
?Yes, they called us asking if Nietes is available to fight Gonzalez. We said yes but they never called again,? ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu.
Gonzalez, the World Boxing Association (WBA) light flyweight titleholder, is scheduled to see action in the undercard of the unification bout between WBO flyweight king Brian Viloria and WBA Super flyweight titlist Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez at the Home Depot Center in California and is still in search of an opponent.
?It was a representative that called the ALA Promotions office but not directly to me.
It was a simple question through phone. They just asked if Nietes was available to fight Gonzalez and we said yes but they never called or e-mailed us back again. We never had any formal negotiation whatsoever,? said Aldeguer.
?If they would give us a formal offer, we would want to fight Roman Gonzalez as Donnie wants the big fights. We would love to fight Gonzalez if the offer is right. We hope to hear from them soon if the target date is Sept. 29.?
Gonzalez, a two-division world champion like Nietes, is one of the best fighters in the lower weight divisions and has an impressive 32-0 record with 27 knockouts.
Even though Gonzalez?s promoters haven?t called back nor have given a formal offer yet, Nietes will be standing by, ready, until he is called upon for the fight that he has been wanting for most of his career.
?We have not talked to Donnie about it yet but he has been studying and has watched tapes of Roman for years now,? said the young Cebuano promoter. ?It will be a tough fight for Donnie as Roman is a very good fighter and a puncher, but Donnie is smart and knows how to win.?
