The road towards the hard battle continues for Robert ?The Ghost? Guerrero. After the miracle of finding a donor for his wife, who is beating leukaemia, the operation was successful and her chances of survival are greater.
This weekend Guerrero will face one of the biggest challenges in his career to face ?Mini Mike Tyson?, a Turkish born 28 year old named Selcuk Aydin. He?s best known for winning medals in the European Amateur Championships and winning the WBC Silver Welterweight Title as a professional boxer. By gaining more success in at the 2005 Mediterranean Games in Spain he has progressed well in his career. Since then he has won all of his 23 fights and has fought a variety of opponents, which leads him to this vacant WBC Interim Welterweight title fight against Guerrero.
Aydin has been erupting since the announcement of this fight; he has made lots of remarks about his opponent. Aydin already met his weight requirement last week and is totally committed to making this a memorable night, which is being aired on Show Sports. Yesterday in the open media event they both looked focused and were professional.
I interviewed Guerrero recently about this current fight and what his thoughts were.
Samaarah Choubak – Selcuk Aydin is undefeated. He didn’t act too professionally in the recent conference call when he made certain statements, and he said previously ?I come to your ocean and show you I am the biggest and best shark in this world. You will lose and disappoint your town fans” Robert what do you say in response to this please?
Robert Guerrero – This guy has a big mouth and it?s going to be my pleasure to shut it up. He has no idea what I?ve been through and how hungry I am. This is my turf and he?ll be swimming with the sharks.
Samaarah Choubak – How have your own preparations been for this fight in Lake Tahoe, and have you done things differently in this camp?
Robert Guerrero – Lake Tahoe was fantastic. I was training in high elevation and I left no stone unturned. People don?t realise that I was in the middle of the forest grinding it out every day. I?m ready to go.
Samaarah Choubak – What sparring partners have you had and how have they helped you?
Robert Guerrero – I got good work with USA Olympian Jose Ramierz who has fast hands and can bring it. Martin Franco was a little bull that came forward and fights just like Aydin. Al Simpson gave me some great work as well. I got good looks from all my sparring partners.
Samaarah Choubak – How are you going to deal with the pressure in the ring from Aydin? We have heard from his camp that his punches are harder than Miguel Cotto’s, does this worry you?
Robert Guerrero – I?m not worried about anything he?s going to do, the question is, how?s he going to handle my boxing skills. I know I?m in a very tough fight and I?m prepared to leave everything in the ring. This is a must see fight for everyone. It?s going to be nonstop action.
Samaarah Choubak – Aydin has a lot of support especially from his country, do you think your fans are going stay loyal to you?
Robert Guerrero – The Bay Area is home to many world champions, Andre Ward, Nonito Donaire, Karim Mayfield, Ava Knight and we all get down in these parts. The fans out here are incredible and I know they?ll be on my side getting busy.
Samaarah Choubak – How confident are you Robert about winning? Do you think this will be an easy fight and if you lose what will your reactions be?
Robert Guerrero – No fight at this level is easy. I?m jumping up two weight classes with no tune up. I?m doing something unprecedented fighting Aydin. This is a very risky fight for me, but the reward is well worth it. I?m only envisioning winning.
Samaarah Choubak – Recently there has been outcry from Escobedo’s camp about weigh in issues with their fight against Broner. You’ve beaten Escobedo recently, what do you think about the rules of the weigh in and the agreeing of the weight class that your fighting in?
Robert Guerrero – I don?t think about those things because I have one of the best nutritionist in the game in Bob Santos. He controls my diet and knows exactly what my body needs to make weight. I can care less about the rules.
Samaarah Choubak – This is going to be a big moment stepping into the ring for Aydin. How are you going to make all the attention diverted to you as he has become quite popular recently?
Robert Guerrero – I?m just going to go about my business as I always do. He can be Mr. Popular if he wants.
Samaarah Choubak – How did you feel when you threw the first pitch at the Oakland?s A game the other day, you?re a big fan of that sport as well, tell us more about that?
Robert Guerrero – It was a great experience throwing out the first pitch at the A?s game and it was against the Yankee?s. If there ever was a game to do it, it was that one. We swept them and my boy CoCo Crisp got the game winning hit. It was fun.
Samaarah Choubak – Robert can you just give us a quick statement overall of what you think and what you will achieve and add anything for your fans please?
Robert Guerrero – I?m coming to leave everything in the ring on July 28th. Aydin is one of the toughest fighters in boxing and I?m talking on the challenge to fight him because no one else would. I respect him as a fighter and I?m going to have to stay mentally focused throughout the whole fight. I?m a big believer in Jesus Christ and I?m not afraid to say it proudly.
