In the imagination of Amir Khan, it was all scripted. As it was said so would it be written. After dispensing of noisy Danny Swift Garcia, Khan would then immediately climb up to the welterweight division and be anointed the next challenger for Floyd Mayweather Jr. Maywather, confined in a jail cell as his sentence days dwindle to a precious few, might even cross the pond to fight Khan in the UK, where Mayweather enjoys much popularity. But Philadelphia fighters like Garcia have been known to flip the script and that’s what happened Saturday night in Las Vegas as Khan already known to be fragile chin got cracked once again. The winner by KO is Garcia and all of Oscar de la Hoya’s horses and all of his men have to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. Losing by KO to Breidis Prescott was chalked up as a one off, a mistake early on in Khan’s pro career and the Bolton lad came roaring back. Scratch Khan-Mayweather, at least for the foreseeable future, and what does Golden Boy do now to revive Amir and chinny chin chin. Insert your plaster of Paris jokes here, folks. To me, the Goldens need only look into their own bullpen to find the obvious next Khan foe. They should tap another of their fighters who needs ring redemption and have he and Khan sort it out. You probably figured by now that I’m laser focused on Vicious Victor Ortiz, who got a broken jaw and a humiliating TKO loss to unheralded Josesito Lopez. Besides the telenovela aspects, I see no way Ortiz-Khan can be anything but a crackerjack fight. Somebody will get sorted out and knocked out. I’ve already picked out the perfect nickname, ‘REDEMPTION OR RUIN.’ The winner of that fight would loom large for Money Mayweather but, as it stands as you read this, the Golden cupboard is bare when it comes to attractive opponents for Floyd. Ortiz-Khan, where it will be understood that Victor cannot quit under pressure and Khan cannot get his jaw smashed up…a fight between these is a natural. Matchmaker Eric Gomez, get busy.
