Last night, inside of the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, Philadelphia?s Danny ?Swift? Garcia scored an improbable upset in stopping heavily-favored British star Amir Khan inside of four rounds.
Khan started the fight off well, tagging Garcia with some clean shots in the early rounds, but a huge left hook caught Amir just behind his jaw and he crashed to the canvas. Khan would rise on wobbly legs and although he would survive the round and fight valiantly in the fifth, he was dropped twice more, with referee Kenny Bayless calling a halt to the action. The defeat is a devastating one for Khan, who sees his record slip to 26-3 with 18 knockouts while Garcia remains unbeaten at 24-0 with 15 knockouts.
There had been talk of Khan challenging Floyd Mayweather sometime next year but those plans obviously fall by the wayside as Garcia collects the WBA belt that had recently been reinstated to Amir in addition to the WBC crown he won with his victory over Erik Morales in March. There was much chatter at the post-fight press conference, as Khan?s trainer Freddie Roach gave Garcia his deserved respect despite still being a bit in disbelief.
?We were fighting a good fight and all of a sudden, one punch changed it,? Roach would state. ?In boxing, you never know. I guess I have to congratulate Mr. Garcia also.?
Entering the post-fight conference was former two-division champion Zab Judah, who pointed out that nothing is for certain in this sport.
