Recently, Philboxing.com spoke with WBA super bantamweight champ Guillermo Rigondeaux. During this interview Rigondeaux fired some shots at the current undisputed champ Nonito Donaire, calling him “The Philipino Phony” and he would go further saying that Donaire was “scared” to fight him. MEMO: To Mr Rigondeaux – We all know that you can certainly fight. We all know that you have had an outstanding amateur career. With that said, you have just 10 professional fights and quite frankly, only those die hard boxing insider fans know who you are.
Boxing is a business and at this point, why should Donaire take a fight Vs.Rigondeaux? Even though Mexican pit bull Jorge Arce is a bit older, he still brings it, and he also sells tickets. Arce Vs. Donaire is a much bigger money fight than a Donaire Vs. Rigondeaux fight is. For this guy to go on the record and call a guy like Nonito Donaire a “Phony” is completely ridiculous. This is no way, shape, or form takes away from Rigondeaux’ fight game. He is no doubt a force in boxing. With that said, he won the WBA interim title back in 2011, and now retains that title but who has he defended it against? No knock at Teon Kennedy, but he’s not exactly a world beater.
Donaire’s resume speaks for itself, and when one looks at it, the last word that should come to mind is “phony.” Impressive is more like it.
Donaire has been in the pro fight game a pretty long time now, and he’s worked hard, trained hard, and he has fought his way up the chain. He’s at the point of making some nice well earned purse money. Arce is a better seller at this point than Guillermo Rigondeaux is.
In a few years Rigondeaux will probably fight his way right into bigger money fights, and I guarantee he won’t be looking back over his shoulder at anyone that doesn’t make him optimal money.
