8CountNews caught up with the new WBC Silver welterweight champion Josesito Lopez (30-4-18KO) and got his thoughts on his huge upset win over Victor Ortiz. If you didn’t know who this guy was, you do now.
Lopez shocked the boxing world by defeating the then champion Victor Ortiz. He broke Ortiz’ jaw in two places and walked away with the title. Check out what he had to say about becoming the new champion and more!
8CN ? What’s up Champ?
JL ? Feeling good man. I’m excited about the big win this weekend.
8CN ? Talk about what this victory and what it does for you as a fighter and a person over all.
JL ? It opens up doors man. It’s opens up doors for not just myself but for other fighters as well.
8CN ? Did you take it personal that they signed to fight Alvarez before they stepped into the ring with you?
JL ? You know what? Yea I was a little disrespected by it but my full motivation was on Victor Ortiz. If anything it added a little more motivation.
8CN ? You took the fight on short notice. Were you concerned at all about having to go up in weight?
JL ? Yea we were a little concerned because we weren’t sure what was going to happen. The big difference was stepping up to a new level. We knew what Ortiz could do in the ring, but going into the fight it was more about what I could do at 147lb.
8CN ? How hungry were you to actually get into the ring and get this fight started?
JL ? Man I have never been so excited and motivated in my life. This was my ?Rocky? moment. These moments don’t come to everyone and I took full advantage of it. It doesn’t happen to everyone.
8CN ? Were you surprised at all about how easily you were able to land that left hook?
JL ? We did our homework man. We worked on different game plans because we have seen a lot of different Victor Ortiz’. We knew that we could get the better of him, I just hoped that my power would be good enough to make him worry about my punches.
8CN ? Ortiz manager told me last night that you broke Victor’s jaw in two places. Did you feel it? Did you know that your punches did that kind of damage?
JL ? No, I was just fighting for my life in there. I was just swinging away man. Unfortunately for him it caused some damage.
8CN ? Victor said he wants to rematch you. Do you want to rematch him right away, or take an option fight first?
JL ? I’ll be talking to my team about that. I did want an option, to have a voice, and I feel that I am in the front seat now. I want to explore my options. We don’t want to wait to fight while Victor is out so if I can get another fight in the mean time I will. We don’t want to stall my career.
8CN ? Has all of this sunk in yet?
JL ? You know what? Not really man. I’m just a fighter. I am not the fastest, the stronger, or the best. I am just a fighter in life and I am glad things went our way. I am just excited and I love to give the fans more.
