Filipino pugs shine in Japan showdown

SIX FILIPINO boxers saw action last Sunday in what was billed as a Philippines-Japan showdown at the IMP Hall in Osaka, Japan producing mixed results.

Four Pinoy pugs won while the other two lost to their fancied rivals.

Boxing manager Tony Aldeguer of the famed ALA Boxing stable of Cebu relayed the news that one of his prized prot?g?s, Robert Allanic, won an 8th round TKO over Hiroake Kusunok in their scheduled 10-rounder.

With the win, the Cebuano super flyweight improved his record to 15 wins, including seven by knockout, against one loss.

The big disappointment was RP lightweight champion Dexter Delada, who suffered a 2nd round KO loss to Koji Samejima.

It was the fourth loss in 20 fights for the 24 year-old southpaw handled by businessman Rex “Wakee” Salud. Three of those four losses came in his last five fights.

Also losing was Federico Catubay, by unanimous decision, to Hiroyuki Hisataka in a 10-rounder. Catubay, born in Zamboanga del Norte, is managed by Sammy Gello-Ani.

Rounding up the 4-2 Filipino result over Japanese boxers were Rocky Fuentes and Louie Bantigue. Fuentes, also a Cebu native managed by Aldeguer?s son, Michael, won a closely judged split decision over erstwhile unbeaten Yuki Nasu. The scorecards read 96-94 twice for Fuentes and 96-94 for Nasu.

In a scheduled 4-rounder, Louie Bantigue made short work of Satoru Uchida, knocking out the Japanese fighter in 2:05 of the first round.
