Lopez Upsets Ortiz: Many questions now need answers… By Armando “Old School” Aguilera

Josesito Lopez’s shocking defeat of Victor Ortiz has sent shock waves throughout the boxing world.

Has the upset created more questions than answers, or more answers than questions? Well the answer to the trivia is about to unfold and the key to those questionable decisions lie in the hands of Golden Boy Promotions! Now spoiled are the premature plans of Ortiz facing Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez this coming September 15.

Even more interesting than the fight itself, was the drama this event has caused due to two rival promoters (Arum vs De la Hoya) battling it out in dueling PPV’s just a mile apart in Las Vegas! For the past two weeks both promoters have been bickering back and forth about who reserved the date first.

Arum’s Top Rank is featuring a dream match-up (Chavez Jr. vs Martinez) boxing fans have craved for! While Golden Boy did have a solid match up in Ortiz vs Alvarez and felt super confident their PPV event was the better draw! Will they reconsider now and change dates, or will they gamble and choose another opponent to face their top draw in Alvarez? Well, due to many unfortunate circumstances Alvarez’s opponents have changed now three different times due to injuries, Williams (terrible motorcycle accident), Kirkland (right shoulder), and now Ortiz (fractured jaw). Seems like Golden Boy has a lot of thinking and maneuvering to do. They have now lost pretty much all their top draws to face Canelo to even have a somewhat profitable night competing against Top Rank’s mouth watering brawl!

Side Note: So while Alvarez waits for his handlers to find another opponent, why not put him up against Cuban standout, Erislandy Lara. Lara has recently called out Alvarez numerous times but has been passed up three times in favor of the above mentioned better draws. While the well-skilled southpaw may be considered Alvarez’s biggest threat, don’t be disappointed if they get a less suitable opponent.

Unfortunately, at this stage Lara is considered too much of a risk and very little reward! Boxing is not totally about the best fight the best. In the eyes of the major players, it’s about the biggest reward and the least amount of risk in getting that reward for everyone involved! At this point in time, Canelo is considered Golden Boy’s second or third biggest cash cow and they’re not going to risk having Lara derail that train!
