The IBF has given its blessing to the May 8 featherweight showdown at the MGM Grand Resort in Las Vegas between recognized 126lb kingpin Manny Pacquiao and IBF/WBA featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez. The one stipulation is that if Pacquiao is victorious, he must face the leading available IBF contender within 90 days. “I’m thankful that the IBF is willing to let me fight for their title,” said Pacquiao. “I want to abide by all the rules of the IBF and WBA.” The WBA has yet to officially approve the fight, but no problems are expected.
Pacquiao and Marquez will meet face-to-face at a Wednesday press conference at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. Also in attendance will be promoters Murad Muhammad and Bob Arum, as well as jr welterweight Juan ‘El Pollo’ Valenzuela who is slated to face unbeaten Miguel Cotto in the chief support bout.
