WBC Light Flyweight Champion Brian “Hawaiian Punch” Viloria, 19-0 (12) has made plans to impress onlookers in his bout against Omar Nino-Romero 23-2-1 (10) this Thursday August 10, inside the Orleans Hotel & Casino, in Las Vegas, NV.
At Tuesday’s final press conference inside Salon B at the Orleans Hotel & Casino, the twenty-five year old undefeated World Champion and college graduate said he is well prepared to deal with the challenger at hand.
“I’ve had great sparring, great training. I’ve been sparring with the Russian Dimitri Kirilov at Wild Card gym. I feel great, great conditioning,” said Viloria.
“We’re going to go in box, fight. Make him work hard. I’m not going to depend on a knockout we’re just going get some work in and get the job done.”
Omar Nino-Romero, who was unable to attend the final press conference, is eager to get some respect and a title on Thursday night. Winner of four straight, two against fighters with Zero combined wins; Nino-Romero is a workmanlike boxer and will have his hands full come Thursday night against the faster, stronger Filipino-American.
Viloria successfully defended his title in February against Jose Antonio Aguirre, in the process suffering a hairline fracture to his fourth metacarpal of his right hand although surgery was not needed, it was obvious that Viloria’s hand affected him throughout the bout.
“It did bother me, I felt it in the third round and I told Freddie in the corner he said just see what you can do. It is perfectly healed up now,” said Viloria of his injured hand.
If successful in his second title defense, the undefeated Viloria looks forward to unifying world titles with WBA Lt. Flyweight Champion Koki Kameda later on this year in Kameda’s home country of Japan.
Viloria and his manager Gary Gittelsohn said that Viloria will travel to Japan to call out Kameda, “I will go to Japan and fight Kameda for Pearl Harbor and what Japan did to my family in the Philippines,” Viloria said this jokingly as his manager Gary Gittelsohn pointed out you would need a rouse to get Kameda to fight Viloria.
Although unifying titles is on Viloria’s list of things to do, the WBC Champion knows he must first deal with Omar Nino Romero.
“I am not the type to look past a fighter. I am very well prepared, we had great training with Freddie and I don’t think Romero has a chance.”
Undercard fighters Jose Luis Zertuche and Diosdado Gabi were also present at the conference.
Zertuche will take on Carlos Bojorquez who is looking to continue his win streak after a tenth round TKO loss to Ike Quartey in December of last year.
Filipino Diosdado Gabi is coming off an impressive showing outboxing IBF-IBO Flyweight Champion Vic Darchinyan, before being TKO’d in the eighth round of a scheduled twelve round title fight.
Replacing Irish John Duddy is previously announced Andy Lee of Kronk Gym. Trained by Emanuel Steward Lee 3-0 (2) will take on the more experienced 32 year old Carl Cockerham 12-11-3 (4) of Las Vegas in a six Round Super Middleweight fight.
This live televised boxing event is scheduled to begin at 5:20 p.m. August 10, 2006 and will be broadcast on the OLN Network at 9 p.m. (EDT), 6 p.m. (PST)
