Do you know what would really suck? If you had the name “Elmo,” like the character on Sesame Street. I brought my 18 month old son to Toys R Us the other day and he quickly pointed at the Elmo book and said: “Yes!” I am a sap and all he has to do is to point at something and I will buy it. So I spent ten dollars on an Elmo book and my son was happy, but then I began to think. I thought that it would be pretty bad to have that name as my own…Elmo’s Boxing Mailbag isn’t right. Now, you might think that there is no guy with that name, but there is. I found a doctor with that name. His name is Doctor Elmo. If you were going for an operation…like heart surgery or gender re-assignment, would you want Doctor Elmo? I would automatically say: “Do you mind if I tickle you?” Whoa, I would be accused of sexual harassment, probably.
That poor guy must go through hell every day. “How’s Big Bird,” he probably hears as he walks down the halls. “Hey, say hi to the Count for me you @#$@#!” People can be cruel and just because a guy has a name like Elmo is no reason to pick on him, although I could probably not stop myself. You would think that if your name was “Elmo” that you’d change your name, unless you are looking for the Sesame Street attention that you would certainly get.

Now, before I begin the mailbag, how about a movie review? I just watched: Final Destination 3, and it was just about as bad as I thought it would be. If you haven’t seen the first 2 (you haven’t missed much), let me fill you in on the premise of all three flicks. A bunch of teens are about to die in some sort of accident, but before that happens, one of them has a premonition and saves some of the kids. Well, the terrible accident happens and they all avoided death, but now death is after them. In this third one, it’s a roller coaster accident, and I really struggled with it. The first one wasn’t bad with an airplane crash, but it still is not worth buying. So, if you are in the mood for a good flick, do not rent any of these three films, especially the third. So, this movie gets the Geno Bambino rating of a 2/5.

Who do you think can punch harder Tyson or Foreman?

In my opinion, George Foreman was the bigger puncher, and would have beaten Iron Mike had they clashed in 1990, when they were trying to set it up. It was the biggest fight in boxing and they were close to getting the match off the ground, but I have it from a reliable source that Tyson did not want to tangle with Big George. Tyson knew that he could not rush Foreman and nobody has ever out-slugged George, and when you figure in the styles of both men, there is only one conclusion. The best punch in Foreman’s arsenal is the uppercut. If you don’t believe me, ask Joe Frazier or Gerry Cooney. They were both launched out of the arena by that very punch. You also have to assume that the jab of the big man at that time, being so hard, would also not be good for Mike.
I would see Iron Mike rushing George and that’s when the uppercuts would come into play and it would be short and sweet. Foreman would get him out of there in four or five rounds. As much as I love Tyson, I have to say that this is the worst possible match for him style-wise.

I appreciate the props man. I have to agree with you. How many times have you gone to other sites and there is not lead ins and the questions are the same: 1. How you feeling? 2. How’s training going? 3. Do you consider this your most important fight? 4. What do you think of Floyd Mayweather, JR.? 5. Talk to your fans champ.
It’s amazing how little research these guys do, and I’m amazed that people are paying for this crap. As time goes by, I get really sick to my stomach over a lot of this nonsense, especially the fact that one of these websites seem to be on the take and that PBF has put them on the payroll. They have lost all objectivity and their numbers are dwindling because the public is realizing it. I am not going to name the site, but people can probably figure it out. I have respect for many of the other sites out there, but there are some that are not doing the sport any favors.
There was a time when I was shopping around for a new website when I left another behind and there are certain ones that I could not even consider for various reasons. There is a reason why Internet writers don’t get the respect that they deserve. It is because of the @#$#@heads that don’t understand that there is a way to handle the boxers and how to write an article or an interview. I think that Stephen A. Smith of Quite Frankly on ESPN is a joke too. He is the modern day Arsenio Hall and I would rather watch that channel where elderly people dance the polka then Smith’s show.
So, I appreciate that you noticed what we are doing. Now, Fights by Fitzy are a lot of fun and I am awaiting the next one to cover for RSR. I’m sure that there will be one in the near future and you will see it here on RSR. Myself and my buddy, Jeremy will be commentating just as we did last time. Joe Siciliano is very popular and he was defending the “Central Massachusetts Heavyweight Title,” not the “I am Fat as Hell” title as you contend. You think that he’s fat? It might just be baby fat…he’ll grow out of it.

If Erik Morales tried to box rather than engage Manny do you think it will be to his favor? Or what if he tried a hit-and-clinch style of fight? I know that’s not his style but i think his only chance of winning would be to come in and be a totally different fighter from their first two encounters. I’m a pacfan and i wouldn’t want to see that kind of a fight. But do you think it will make a difference?

Thanks for the compliments my friend. I think that Erik Morales must use every bit of experience that he has and fight the smartest fight of his career to win this thing. He must figure out the rhythm of the Pacman. One of the few flaws of Manny is to present the same attack in the sense that he doesn’t really change up his movement…sort of how Felix Trinidad used to fight. Bernard Hopkins exploited that monotony and EM will have to do the same. If he can hold and frustrate Manny too, it’d be a good idea. He has to fight the perfect fight and be as resourceful as he can possibly be in order to pull this off. I do consider Morales in this rubber match and at this point in his career, the toughest challenge that Pacman has faced in quite some time.

You have captured the hearts of Filipino readers because of your unbiased way of treating the pacman. I’m also a die hard pacman fan and i want to thank you for giving pac what is due him.
I have a couple of questions
1. How do you score a round where both fighters had a knock-dwon? does it automatically scored an even round?
2. I’m afraid that pacman will lose to morales in their rubbermatch because 1) gatorade is allowed to be taken during the match 2) i think it is required now in nevada to wear heavier gloves. gatorade will certainly help morales replenish his energy during the bout and the heavier gloves will affect pacman’s punching power. Do you think my analysis is right?

First of all, I want to thank you very much and all the Filipinos for the appreciation of my work and my opinion. Okay…onto your questions…
1. A round that sees both fighters on the canvas is a wash. In other words, fighter A knocks down fighter B, which would make it a 10-8 round for A, but when B returns the favor, we are back to square one: 10-10. Now, we are basically forgetting those knockdowns and are deciding just who was it that had gotten the better of it in that round and they will be rewarded a 10-9 round. 2. The entire gloves thing was more a mental thing with Pacman, I think. Perhaps it will affect him again, but I don’t think that it will. I don’t think that Gatorade will have a big impact on boxing. I think that both are probably a mental thing. if a fighter thinks: “Wow, this Gatorade is going to work wonders…then it will. Boxing being a 90% mental game…maybe it’s a bigger thing that I give it credit for.

Hmm. Scully vs. Cunningham…obviously I would favor Ice over this guy that has involved himself in a situation that Cory Spinks even seems embarrassed by. He’s like that @$#@$@ friend that always gets into fights and somehow you have to get involved to save him. Spinks vs. Rivera is a good match between two guys that are still seeking respect and would get some should they win this encounter.

These are strange selections for dream fights, but they are a welcomed change of pace for sure. I can probably have some fun with this one.
Mike Tyson vs. Dan Severn
Dan Severn ruined the UFC. I was a fan of sorts until he came around with that 1970’s mustache and insisted on rolling around on the ground with his opponent for 40 minutes or so. I wanted to see the knockouts, not male mud wrestling! So, should Iron Mike in his prime face Severn in a boxing match, he wins by first round KO. If it is in the octagon, Severn wins by submission or decision because Tyson would be a fish out of water here.
Mike Tyson vs. Royce Gracie
Same story as above but no 1970’s mustache.
Andre the Giant vs. Nikolay Valuev
This is a tough one. Andre went undefeated for 15 years before losing at Wrestlemania 3 to Hulk Hogan and was the king of the battle royal, and had a killer afro, but he wasn’t really mobile. He was very clumsy. Valuev seems to have the edge here, especially in a boxing ring. Now, remember this is professional wrestling. Should Valuev be winning, that security guard that he beat the hell out of could run out with a steel chair and screw him out of victory. So, in a boxing match, Valuev KO’s him in the 1st. In a wrestling match, Andre wins with some help from that guard. In an evening gown match, we are all winners.
Hulk Hogan vs. Mike Tyson
Did I ever tell you of my bad urinal experience with Hulk Hogan? For those of you that don’t know, I used to use the urinal, but I have been traumatized. I worked at Roy Rogers on the Mass Pike and I was minding my own business when all of a sudden, Hulk Hogan begins using the urinal beside me. “Whatcha gonna do Geno, when this 24 inch python runs wild all over you?!!!” Anyway, I haven’t used one since. I just know that one day when I get over my fear and use one again, Zeus, the human wrecking machine will use the one beside me and I don’t want that. Okay, back to your question: Tyson wins no matter what.
Bruce Lee/Jackie Chan vs. Pacman
I would favor the karate-chopping duo. They look bad ass to me in their movies and nobody could take them on.

What is up with Floyd? Good question. He’s not going to face Margarito or Rivera…no way. Carlos Baldomir might be off of this list too because it is a no win situation. Even with wins over Zab Judah and Arturo Gatti, Baldomir still isn’t a household name and what he lacks in skill, he more than makes up for in drive and momentum. He does not to fight PBF to lose. He plans to win, and he may just do that.

I want to see Jose Antonio Rivera get the bout, even though he has threatened me with a kick to the grapes, but I don’t scare easily. I was never beaten in my backyard and I don’t intend to start now. (I also do not intend on taking on guys with the title of “boxing champ” either.) Rivera needs a big bout and would give the fans a great show if given the opportunity, but it doesn’t seem likely. The people involved directly in boxing know what Rivera brings, but the public is in the dark due to the lack of exposure for the sport. So, if the big names aren’t forced to face him by public demand, they won’t.
I hope that Pac has some more left hands for our politicians here. 4 dollars for a gallon of gas is proof that there is some shady @#$@$ going on here in the U.S.A. I need a guy like Steven Seagal to take care of this situation. He always beats the hell out of people and solves everything in his movies. Doesn’t even matter if he’s chubby.

I would love an award, but I don’t get them very often. Once, I was bugging my boss for a raise and he and the other big shots at my company took me out to eat at a fancy restaurant to give me a raise, I was assuming, but all they did was to pay for the meal and give me a “Certificate of Appreciation,” whatever the hell that is. I wanted to tell them that they could wipe their fat @#$@@# with it, but I bit my tongue and am currently biding my time. 1.PBF, contrary to one idiotic website’s point of view, did not take a bout with Margarito because he is capable and can beat PBF and I would pick him to win. He is too dangerous and could jeopardize the super bout with De La Hoya. He’s not avoiding him because he’s a bum as some contend. He is the real thing. I am in the minority that thinks that Zab Judah is one of the best in the game and when he’s on, he’s hard to beat. I think that PBF’s placement above Pac is an overall picture. PBF hasn’t lost yet and has beaten some guys easily that have gone on to become huge stars. Pacman is second, but he is a close second for sure. 2. I don’t think that Pacman will be retiring any time soon, but if he does, he has more than proven himself with his bouts with EM, MAB, and JMM. 3. All of the sanctioning bodies are tied for last place.

I think that Margarito is a highly skilled and capable warrior in the ring that has improved his game by leaps and bounds. He showed against Kermit Cintron just how far he has come and when you take everything into consideration going into a bout with Floyd, you have to come to the conclusion that it is not going to be an easy match to pick. Floyd is not a big guy and even his wins over Judah and Gatti were over guys that have moved up in weight themselves. Margarito is a big guy that will be aggressive and pin PBF on the ropes and perhaps win. I don’t consider him overrated at all. I think that he’s being underrated by much of the boxing media… De La Hoya doesn’t need anyone on his side. He is a huge draw regardless…biggest name in boxing.
I had the Godfather book, but it was stolen from me by one of my co-workers a few years back. It was a gift from a girl that I knew. I had to tell my wife that it was a gift from a guy because she doesn’t like the idea of me getting gifts from women…the nerve! Even when I told her that it was a gift from a dude, she laughed and said: “He probably knew that you were a boyscout,” whatever that means… So, I never read that book, but I did like the movie.

Just watched your fights by fitzy and you and Jeremy did the job. “250 pounds mostly not muscle” was great! that fat guy looked clumsly as hell but you guys made it really funny and you should take over HBO’s boxing after dark team. they suckk!!! I’m glad that you liked it. I think that Jeremy was hilarious and collectively we did well. Joe Siciliano is a trip man. You have to give him credit for getting in there at his age and slight weight problem. HBO’s B.A.D. team blows for sure…with the exception of Max Kellerman. He’s the only saving grace for that team.
