LOS ANGELES: Winchell Campos, a former sportswriter and chess player in the Philippines and in-charge of Pacquiao?s household in Palazzo, allegedly tried to attack columnist Granville Ampong.
Last month, Ampong?s column on Pacquiao?s stand on same-sex marriage was misinterpreted as implying homosexuals should be put to death. Several articles based on Ampong?s column caused uproar in the gay community in the United States that led The Grove, a Los Angeles mall to issue a ban on Pacquiao. But after clarification from Ampong, Pacquiao accepted the columnist?s apology.
Ampong was on his way to visit the Filipino boxing icon in his early morning training when Campos allegedly tried to attack him. At least 15 witnesses attested that Campos verbally attacked and attempted to punch Ampong at the Charles Turner landmark in Griffith Park, Los Angeles.
?My only response to him was, ?Do it, I?ll send you to jail,? Ampong said. He added that he already reported the incident to the police and is preparing to file charges against Campos.
Campos was unavailable for comment at the time of this writing.
